Thirty-eight students from 19 schools participated in the Peace in Ukraine high school chess tournament held today at École Secondaire Sisler High School in Winnipeg. Co-winners of the tournament were Adam Katz of Vincent Massey Collegiate and Christian Ventura of Sisler, each scoring 5.5 points in the six-round event.
Players from École Secondaire Sisler High School won the team event, followed by Miles Macdonnell Collegiate and École Regent Park.
The tournament was held as a show of support for Peace in Ukraine and all those affected by the conflict, with parents and others encouraged to make a contribution to the Canadian Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal or the Canada-Ukraine Foundation.
The Manitoba Chess Association wishes to express a special thank you to Ms. Orysya Petryshyn, a teacher at Sisler for her initiative in organizing the very successful event.
